My first 50-mile ultra-marathon had everything I had hoped for—a challenging and endorphin-triggering course that tested and pushed my personal limits, yet incredibly scenic and wild, coupled with good weather and great company. The event took place on June 21, 2008 in the Little Bighorn-Tongue River areas of the Bighorn National Forest, offering a grueling course that was geologically unique to the rugged terrains of Bighorn Mountains.

I went to Paul’s memorial the other day; it was of course, a difficult task for me as it was I’m sure, for many if not all in attendance. I arrived early and sat with my 12-year-old son Mason who knew and liked Paul as well. We sat as close as we could to the front. As soon as I settled in, the very reason that we were all there started to weigh heavily upon me, tears were consistent the entire 2 plus hours that I sat there. It was a pleasant looking church, like all churches it was spacious and clean and in fact had a calming effect even if I couldn’t keep my eyes or throat clear of tears. It was certainly fitting for our last goodbye to our friend. I listened intently to everyone who spoke, Paul’s sister, the board members, the Constables, his wife Diana and friends. All the time while listening, I was sitting patiently, waiting and ready until my time would come to speak. Everyone told a little story of how Paul had bamboozled many of them into becoming a Team Continuum runner or sponsor or participant in some way. They also spoke about his boundless, giving ways, they each expressed a small part of who he was and how he lived so vibrantly and how he undauntingly championed a cause that most in this world couldn’t fathom. Everyone stood upon the dais in front of the podium and told a story of a man who gave his all and then gave it again until he was breathless from the effort and then gave again! Their words made Paul seem like the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, only Paul weighed in as a Featherweight; he was obviously the Hero that Championed us all in some way. Paul was fearless in his tireless pursuit of a Tyrant we call Cancer. Paul spared himself no time, no luxury to rest, he gave the beast no reason to stay, and Paul attacked not only his Cancer but also the Cancer that plagued us all on every front. Paul stood at the pinnacle of the fight and never gave an inch. Paul unerringly had a gift, many in fact. Paul could make everyone who stood before him give in to his will, many of those at the Memorial gave full testimony to that end. Paul also had an endlessly giving nature. Those that he indentured, those that were needy and those that he passed by in the streets can bear witness to this. Paul had this way of introducing someone, as if they were the best at whatever it was they did for a living. I own a security company and at every introduction, you would think that my company was worldwide and that if it weren’t for me, no one would ever be safe. His words were always flawless; he made everyone seem like a shining star, it was great feeling to be introduced by Paul. It was also a great feeling to be Paul’s friend. Back to the moment of it becoming my turn to speak at the memorial. First, let me fill you in a little bit about myself. I am a 6-foot tall 300 lb man, a bit heavy sure but pretty solid. I am a former United States Marine and once, during a training/evaluation exercise directly contributed to saving another Marines life. I am a 5th degree Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu with 26 years of training and practical application. I have taught combat self-defense while in the Marine Corps and have taught about a thousand students over this time. I have been accredited with many awards, Master Instructor of the Year, as awarded by Grandmasters from across the globe. I have skydived, jumped out of moving helicopters into the sea, bungee jumped off of the Manhattan Bridge in the black of the night, I have fought in martial arts tournaments both in NY and across world when I was in the Marine Corps. I have body guarded some of the world’s ‘toughest’ rappers and at the drop of a hat, I can take charge of a critical situation without fear or missing a beat’. All of this and when I was in Paul’s presence, I felt small. Not insignificant, anyone with Paul was never that but, I felt small in comparison. Paul had that way about him that had everyone thinking he was giant or was standing on stilts and he was 20-feet tall. And, he would look down to speak to us, not in a bad way, just his way of being that had us all, looking up to him. His greatness preceded him and is his legacy. While staring at the podium I was waiting to go up, I kept saying to myself that I would go next, I would go next. Tears were constantly choking me. I couldn’t see and kept wiping my nose and eyes on my hands and sleeves. I kept thinking of how hard this might be on my son who was sitting next to me, watching me cry. I couldn’t help myself. In the end I never spoke at the memorial so here I sit writing this down. When it was over, I went to the man who I found out was Paul’s son, their likeness was obvious. I introduced myself and told him what his father meant to me, I reached out to hug him and did so but honestly didn’t want to let go. I went upstairs to leave, my car was directly outside and standing outside of the Church was Diana, Paul’s wife. I said hello and reintroduced my son. She commented on how tall he’s become. Diana recalled how Paul and Mason holding the Olympic Torch took photos together the day that Paul was involved in the Torch Pass. Lastly, Diana told me how Paul loved me so. It was that comment that made my day, it was that single comment that made this as sad and as wonderful a day as it could be. I said my goodbyes to Diana as she turned to talk to another Paul’s friends. As I drove off, I was able to feel good about the day. Diana telling me that Paul loved me meant that Paul at some point must have told this to Diana. I will always hold on to that. Glen Beck

My fiancé and I had the privilege of meeting Paul as athletes in the 2007 NYC Marathon. Coming from California for the race, I had only exchanged a few emails with him but felt immediately inspired by all he had accomplished during his illness, his selflessness and his dedication to a team he built and cared so much about. He became a bit of a celebrity to me. I remember first seeing Paul at the Team Continuum booth and feeling a little intimidated to introduce myself. Noticing my hesitation, he quickly extended his hand to introduce himself with the hugest smile on his face. He warmly welcomed us to his table and offered us all the loot he could give us to prepare for the race and t-shirts to give to our families. He was one of the nicest and most generous people I have ever met. Our hearts go out to Paul's family. We will keep you in our prayers.

What a man, what a fight. What an inspiration. Paul, You rocked my world in the short time that I knew you. It was an honer to know you. My sincere condolences to the family

I was overcome with sadness today when I read the news about Paul. He was my dear friend who I met in 2006. I met him through Team Continuum. I was accepted to run, but my husband was not. ALl the charities were full....except Team Continuum's. Our wonderful fate... :) I emailed Pual and we talked that very night. He was so encouraging and took both of us in as his athletes even though I was a registered runner. We met at the marathon...and I instantly felt forever connected to him. His passion and his love for others clearly exemplifies what he was to all that met him. After the marathon came and went...we kept in touch...and even were able to meet up in Chicago for an evening out....he was craving Shepard's pie and a good English pub. :) He had a wonderful appetite...and I mean that in more ways than one. Appetite for life, appetite for people, appetite for naughty food, appetite for helping others. I remember my signature with him was hugs. He told me after that I needed to take it easy on him as the cancer made holes in his bones and he was fragile. Now I am a petite woman...and that was when I realized how fragile my dear Paul was...so from then on it was gentle hugs in person and gentle hugs sent from long distance. He never got the chance to meet my three boys...but they know him as we talked about him and his fancy car. :) I last talked to him before he was going to travel to see his dad and family in the Spring I think...it was about that time now that the kids were out of school that I was going to call him up and ask how his trip was...and then the email sat in my inbox..of his passing. I loved him as my dear friend Paul. He truly was a gift for so many people. His generosity to help others and befriend so many. He has created two marathon runners out here in Muskego, WI. ( a suburb of Milwaukee) And he has also created marathon runners in us that won't run a marathon without raising money for his cancer charity...as that is the best gift, the most rewarding of the marathon experience. Paul you will always be in our hearts...and in our memories...and may the pain be lifted finally so your spirit may continue to soar. Jackie and Ed Brozynski

I just found out about Paul's departure today (June 16). I have the privilege to meet Paul when I ran the 2007 NYC marathon. It is truly heartbreaking and humbling to lose someone as passionate and committed as Paul. I am a cancer drug discovery researcher and I know first hand that it takes many years to develop a drug, yet time is everything to many cancer patients. The way I've always looked at it: No cancer drugs will ever be more potent and effective than a collective group such as Team Continuum in fighting cancer, thanks to individuals exemplified by Paul Nicholls. If we have more people like Paul, the world will be a better place, even in the face of cancer. He IS our cure to cancer.

Learning of Paul's passing just today (6/12/09), I first wanted to echo the powerful, accurate, and poignant sentiments of the responders to date and add a few of my personal experiences with Paul that span over 5 years and epitomize him. My immediate recollections relate to his generosity, spirit, and energy. I had the privilege to visit him at his Manhattan home on several occasions. He humbly showed me (and let me hold) the Olympic torch that he carried. In the early days of Team Continuum, I picked up my sponsor T-shirts at his home. He graciously introduced me to Diana and took time from his already incredibly busy schedule to ask about my training and professional endeavors. I also had the privilege to walk with him after the first time Team Continuum was invited to the CBS Morning Show. He literally stole the show with his passion and commitment to helping cancer patients and families. His newsletters also exuded energy. I always could imagine him speaking to me through his words. I also visited him at the first Team Continuum office (outside of his home). I was privileged to see the editing of a video that would be presented at an event at Queen Elizabeth's NYC residence in January 2008. This event, as referenced previously by Jen Anderson, was very moving. Energy and altruism were the real hosts. Paul made time for everyone despite the fact that this spacious apartment was filled to capacity. The post-event dinner was equally successful yet warm and inviting. One year the NYC Transit strike interfered with the plan to deliver presents to children in hospitals for the holidays. However, it did not deter Paul. To close, I am a better and stronger person for having met Paul. He will make his mark in Heaven. My sincere condolences to Diana and his family.
